Willem Prinsloo Museum

Historic Distillery

One of South Africa’s oldest mampoer distilleries traces its roots to the historic Kaalfontein Farm, originally owned by the Prinsloo family. Dating back generations, the Prinsloos began their craft with humble, homemade distilling equipment, using locally harvested fruit to create exceptional mampoer. Their dedication to perfecting this traditional spirit turned a simple farm practice into a celebrated legacy. Today, the distillery stands as a testament to South African ingenuity and the enduring art of mampoer-making, offering a taste of history in every sip.

Authentic Mampoer

Antique Kettles
Rural farmers in South Africa mastered the art of mampoer-making using simple, homemade kettles and locally sourced fruit. They ingeniously crafted distillation equipment from scrap metal and copper, creating functional yet rustic setups. Excess fruit from their farms, such as peaches, apricots, or plums, was fermented and distilled into a potent, crystal-clear spirit. This process not only preserved surplus harvests but also became a cherished tradition, passed down through generations, embodying the resourcefulness and creativity of rural farming communities.
